You can rename an audience at any time — the new name updates everywhere the audience is used inside Metadata, and is pushed out to the ad channels it's connected to. Renaming never changes who the audience targets; only its name changes.
How to rename an audience
- Go to the Audiences page.
- Find the audience, open its actions menu (⋮), and choose Rename.
- Enter the new name and click Save.
The new name appears immediately in Metadata. It can take a few moments to reach the connected ad channels.
Naming rules
- The name is required — it can't be blank.
- Maximum 50 characters.
- Leading and trailing spaces are removed automatically.
- Names don't have to be unique — two audiences can have the same name.
Which audiences can be renamed
Every audience type can be renamed — static lists, firmographic audiences, dynamic audiences (such as lookalike and retargeting), and CRM-sourced audiences. There's no restriction based on the audience's status, so you can rename one that's still processing, or one that's already used in a live campaign.
Archived audiences: the Rename option only appears for active audiences. To rename an archived audience, unarchive it first.
Who can rename
Any user with edit access in the account that owns the audience can rename it — you don't have to be the person who created it.
What happens when you rename
- The new name appears immediately in Metadata — in the Audiences list, in campaigns, and in reports.
- Campaigns using the audience are not affected — they keep targeting the same audience; only the name changes.
- The new name is pushed automatically to the ad channels the audience was uploaded to:
| Channel | Renamed automatically? |
|---|---|
| Yes | |
| Facebook / Instagram (Meta) | Yes |
| Google Ads | Yes |
| X (Twitter) | Yes |
| No |
A channel is only updated if the audience was actually uploaded to it.
⚠️ Reddit: Reddit does not allow renaming an audience after it has been uploaded. If the audience was already sent to Reddit, it keeps its old name on Reddit — the new name applies only inside Metadata and on the other channels.
Renaming an audience used in a live campaign
You can rename an audience while it's used in a launched campaign — running or paused. The campaign keeps running and keeps targeting the audience; only the displayed name changes.
This is different from a Target Group: a Target Group cannot be renamed while it's used in live experiments. To rename a Target Group, pause or archive the campaigns using it first.
Tips
Tip: Keep audience names short and descriptive. The name is reused when Metadata builds campaign and ad-set names on the connected channels, so a clear, concise name keeps everything readable end to end.
Tip: Renaming is a safe, reversible action — it doesn't change targeting, membership, or campaign delivery. If you rename by mistake, just rename it back.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does renaming an audience affect my campaigns? No. Campaigns keep targeting the same audience — only the name changes. The new name shows up in campaigns and reports right away.
Will the new name show up on LinkedIn / Meta / Google / X? Yes — for any channel the audience was uploaded to. The update happens in the background and may take a few moments. Reddit is the exception (see above).
Can I rename an audience that's still building or syncing? Yes. There's no restriction based on the audience's processing state.
Why don't I see a Rename option? The audience may be archived (unarchive it first), you may not have edit access for that account, or renaming may not be enabled for your account yet — contact support if so.
Can I rename the Target Group an audience belongs to? Not while that Target Group is used in live experiments. Pause or archive the campaigns using it first, then rename the Target Group.
