Get Started: Connect LinkedIn

Connect your LinkedIn ad account to launch campaigns and sync audiences from Metadata. Most connection problems come from missing roles, so check them before you start.

Before you connect

1. A direct role on the ad account

The LinkedIn login you connect with needs one of these roles directly on the ad account:

  • Demand Hub: Account Manager, Campaign Manager or Account Billing Admin.
  • Audience Only: any role except Viewer, so Creative Manager or higher.

Viewer access isn't enough, and being in the company's LinkedIn Business Manager isn't enough on its own. To check your role, open the account in LinkedIn Campaign Manager and click the ⚙ icon (top right) > Manage access.

2. Company Page roles (Demand Hub)

On the Company Page linked to the ad account, the same login needs:

  • Sponsored Content Poster, so Metadata can create your ads.
  • Lead Gen Forms Manager, so Metadata can download your leads.

A Page Super Admin already has both. To assign them, open the Company Page from Campaign Manager and go to Settings > Manage admins > Paid media admins. You can also assign them in LinkedIn Business Manager.

If you don't see Settings on the Page, you're not a Page admin. Ask one of the Page's Super Admins to add you.

3. A campaign group with no objective

You'll pick a campaign group while connecting, including on Audience Only accounts. It must be created in LinkedIn with the objective turned off. See LinkedIn Group Objective.

Connect

  1. In Metadata, go to Settings > Integrations and click Connect on the LinkedIn card.
  2. Review Before Connecting to LinkedIn and click Connect.
  3. Sign in to LinkedIn in the pop-up and approve every requested permission.
  4. Under Select Your Account, choose the Business Ad Account and Campaign Group Name, then click Submit.

Tip: If you use more than one LinkedIn login, connect from a private or incognito window so the pop-up signs in with the right one.

Check the connection

Click Settings on the LinkedIn card, then Test connection. It checks that the connected login still has the ad account role Metadata needs, and the Company Page roles if you connected recently. Run it again whenever someone's LinkedIn access changes.

How to reconnect

Click Settings on the LinkedIn card and run Test connection. If it shows Reconnect LinkedIn, click it and sign in again. Otherwise click Disconnect, then Connect again and choose the same ad account and campaign group.

On a trial account, disconnecting pauses your LinkedIn campaigns and deletes the audiences Metadata created in LinkedIn. Contact support@metadata.io before you disconnect.

Troubleshooting

No ad account in the list

You see "No LinkedIn ad account was found for your login." Metadata only lists ad accounts where your login has a direct role (step 1).

  • If you signed in with the wrong LinkedIn login, such as a second or personal profile, click Cancel and connect again with the right one.
  • If you just added the role, click I am ready! Let's try again! If the account still doesn't appear, ask an ad account admin to remove your role and add it again.

Campaign group objective error

You see "You are currently trying to connect a campaign group with the objective set which is not allowed." Create a new campaign group in Campaign Manager with the objective turned off, then connect again and choose it.

Missing permissions

You see "Missing LinkedIn permissions" or "LinkedIn rejected one or more permission checks". The login is missing a role from steps 1 or 2. Add it in LinkedIn, then click Submit again, or run Test connection if you're already connected. You don't need to sign in again.

If you see "LinkedIn did not grant every API permission this account needs", reconnect and approve every permission in the pop-up.

Ad account isn't linked to a Company Page

You see "This LinkedIn ad account is not associated with a supported Company Page." Link the ad account to your Company Page in Campaign Manager, then connect again.

Connection expired

You see "Your LinkedIn connection has expired or was revoked", "Error refreshing token, please reintegrate" or "Audience sync failed: the connected user has no access to the LinkedIn ad account. Please reintegrate". This happens after a password change, or when the connecting person leaves or loses access. Reconnect (see How to reconnect above), then run Test connection.

Until you reconnect, Metadata can't update your LinkedIn campaigns, and spend and leads stop coming in. If you need data from that time, email support@metadata.io after you reconnect.

Launches, uploads or leads fail after connecting

You see "403 Forbidden" or "No access." on launches, creative uploads or audience uploads, or leads stop syncing. The connected login is missing the Company Page roles (step 2) or its ad account role (step 1). Add them in LinkedIn, then run Test connection.

Test connection shows a problem

  • Connection needs attention: Metadata saw an error on the saved connection, such as an expired login. The message under it explains the cause.
  • Permissions need attention: a role or permission is missing, or the connection needs renewing. Follow the message shown. It may offer Reconnect LinkedIn.
  • Verification unavailable: LinkedIn couldn't confirm the permissions. Try again in a few minutes. If it stays that way, reconnect.

Campaign group is full

You see "Maximum campaigns per campaign group limit reached". LinkedIn caps how many campaigns one group can hold, and deleting campaigns doesn't free space. Create a new campaign group with the objective turned off, then reconnect and choose it. Existing campaigns keep running in the old group. See Can I Change Ad Accounts and Campaign Groups?

Audiences stay on Updating or show as inactive

LinkedIn can take up to 72 hours to match an audience, so give it time before rebuilding. An audience needs at least 300 matched members before LinkedIn lets you use it. See What is the minimum audience upload limit? If all your audiences go inactive at once, the connected login has probably lost its role. Fix the role or reconnect, then open each audience's ⋮ menu and click Upload to LinkedIn.

Ad account on hold

You see "LinkedIn ad account is on hold and ads are not delivering". This is usually a billing or payment issue. Review Billing in LinkedIn Campaign Manager.

Conversation or Message Ad sender missing

See Why don't I see my sender listed when trying to create my Convo Ad? and Add LinkedIn Convo Ad Senders.
