Connect your Microsoft Advertising account to launch search campaigns from Metadata.
Before you connect
- Your Microsoft Advertising account setup is complete.
- The login you connect with has Standard User access or higher on the ad account. To invite someone, open Users in Microsoft Advertising, select the ad account, click + Invite user and choose Standard User or higher. They accept from the invitation email.
- Consent is turned on for your Universal Event Tracking (UET) tag. See Microsoft's UET consent guide and All about: Conversion Events and Thank you page Pixel.
Company Microsoft logins: your IT team may need to approve Metadata once before anyone can connect. See Need admin approval under Troubleshooting below.
Connect
- In Metadata, go to Settings > Integrations and click Connect on the Microsoft Ads card.
- On Before Connecting to Microsoft Ads, sign in with the same identity you used to create your Microsoft Advertising account:
- Connect with Microsoft for a Microsoft (work, school or personal) account.
- Connect with Google if you created the account with Google.
- Sign in through the pop-up and accept the permissions.
- Under Select Your Account, choose the Ad Account and click Submit.
How to reconnect
Click Settings on the Microsoft Ads card, then Disconnect. Click Connect again and choose the same ad account, so your campaigns stay linked.
On a trial account, disconnecting pauses your Microsoft Ads campaigns and deletes the audiences Metadata created there. Contact support@metadata.io before you disconnect.
Troubleshooting
Need admin approval
Microsoft shows "Need admin approval" for the app Metadata-Prod. Your organization's Microsoft Entra settings don't let users approve new apps themselves. Someone in your IT team who can grant app consent in Entra has to approve Metadata once. Being a Microsoft Advertising admin isn't enough. See Microsoft's role requirements.
Send your admin these steps:
- On the approval screen, click Have an admin account? Sign in with that account.
- Sign in with the Entra admin account.
- Check the app is Metadata-Prod, review the permissions and approve them for the organization.
If Metadata-Prod is already listed in your tenant, the admin can instead go to entra.microsoft.com > Enterprise apps > All applications > Metadata-Prod > Permissions > Grant admin consent. See Microsoft's instructions.
Once approved, the original user clicks Connect with Microsoft again and signs in with their own login.
Pop-up closes and nothing happens
Sign-in was cancelled or blocked before it finished, for example on the admin approval screen. Allow pop-ups for platform.metadata.io and try again. If you saw an approval screen, follow the steps above first.
Sign-in identity error
You see "IdentityTypeMismatch" or "GoogleAccountIsRequired". You used a different sign-in type from the one your Microsoft Advertising login was created with. Click Cancel, then Connect again and choose the other button: Connect with Google instead of Connect with Microsoft, or the other way round. Use a private or incognito window so the right account signs in.
No ad account in the list
You see "No Ad account found". You signed in with an identity that has no role on a Microsoft Advertising account.
- To try the other sign-in type, click Cancel, then Connect again and choose the other button (Microsoft or Google).
- If an admin has just invited you as a Standard User, click I am ready! Let's try again!
Connection expired
You see "Error refreshing MicrosoftAds Ads API token, please reintegrate." or "InvalidCredentials". Microsoft stopped accepting the saved connection, for example after a password change or when the connecting person lost access. Reconnect Microsoft Ads (see How to reconnect above).
Customer Match policy not accepted
If your account syncs audiences to Microsoft Ads, you may see "Accept the Microsoft Ads Customer Match policy in Integrations settings before uploading a Customer Match audience". Click Settings on the Microsoft Ads card, then click Accept next to MicrosoftAds customer match policy. Then open the audience's ⋮ menu and click Upload to Microsoft Ads.
No Microsoft Ads card on the Integrations page
Microsoft Ads is turned on per account. Ask your Metadata CSM to enable it.
